Really Live Today
“Do what you love and everything else will follow,” is something that I’ve heard off and on for years. To me it means, if I focus on what I love to do, everything else that I want in life, will easily come.
Anthony Burgess, the novelist, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor at age 40 and would probably only have a year to live. At the time, Burgess was working as a teacher and had already published several novels. But when he got the devastating news, he made a decision about how he would provide for his wife after his death. His answer was to become a full-time writer. It has been said that during “the last year of his life,” he wrote five & a half novels.
Here is where the story takes a turn. Some reports say that he was misdiagnosed by his doctor. Other reports say his cancer went into remission. Either way, instead of dying, he embarked on a lifelong career as a novelist, winning multiple awards and earning great fame for his book “A Clockwork Orange” which was turned into a movie by legendary director Stanley Kubrick. Ultimately, he died at the age of 76 of lung cancer.
What if Burgess wasn’t misdiagnosed? What if he did have cancer and because he choose to immerse himself in expressing his gifts, shining his Light, the cancer had to remiss, cancel, itself. What if, because of his decision to share his unique insights, the level of freedom Within him soared, releasing him from any tethers to mediocrity? Some say he was driven by fear, but I think he was driven by the love he had for his wife and his desire to support her.
Can you imagine what could you achieve if you lived like you only had a year left? Not the doingness, but livingness & lovingness! What if you so immersed yourself in expressing your gifts that your Light shined like never before? Seeing the beauty around you, loving your family and friends, truly expressing your creativity!
OK – so can we challenge ourselves to live like you only had a year left? What would you do today? Can you do some form of that today? Even if it’s only for five minutes. We may not be able to drop everything and make a drastic career change but maybe we can make a drastic shift in our life.
Martha Graham said, “There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it." I have to agree.
